Let's instead focus on what's really going on when you gain weight and what can be done to fix the problem.

What Causes Weight Gain: The Truth

The actual truth about what causes weight gain is not something you hear a lot about in the mainstream media, although you have heard of it.

It's a hormone that will be familiar to you, called insulin.

Insulin is responsible for regulating blood sugar, which is fairly common knowledge and you don't need a medical degree to know this. What is less well known about insulin is what it does with excess blood sugar once it has taken it out of the bloodstream.

Again, you don't need a medical degree to learn this information, because it's everywhere, thanks to the Internet.

Insulin works hard taking excess blood sugars to the cells that need it for energy production, but when there is a constant supply of this excess, the cells can't take in more than the can use. So they close off access to insulin, resisting it's ability to offload the sugar molecules.

Insulin Resistance

insulin resistanceOur bodies become what is called ″insulin resistant″ meaning insulin is no longer able to do its main job.

So instead, insulin takes the excess sugar to the liver, where it is processed and stored as fat, while ever more insulin is released in an attempt to deal with the excess sugar.

When you consume too much sugar in your diet and you don't use it all up through exercise, the excess is stored as fat. I think we all know that!

What many of us may not know is that the fat is not only stored as visceral fat around our organs and in our bellies, thighs etcetera, it is also stored in the liver.

The Liver

The liver works hard doing many essential jobs that keep us alive, such as removing toxins from the body. When the liver becomes overwhelmed by excess fat, it develops what is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.″

The symptoms are similar to how the liver becomes damaged by excessive alcohol consumption. The liver becomes enlarged and eventually scarred (cirrhosis). This impairs liver function, something we definitely do not want!

However, there is more going in inside of us that needs to be known. And it's not good.

Insulin also has another task aside from regulating blood sugar. As a fat storing hormone, its other job is to prevent fat from being converted back to sugar for energy.

That means the more insulin is coursing through the body, the less we are able to use our existing fat stores, while ever more fat is being stored. That is, we gain weight as excess fat!

That's how it happens. That's what is causing most of us to gain weight (when it's not through water retention or increase muscle mass).

If you are consuming more sugar than you can use, it is being stored as fat and when you become insulin resistant, you simply won't burn off that fat. So you just keep getting more.

The Natural Solution

At this point, knowing what I just shared, you are probably getting a light bulb moment and can see clearly what you must do to stop gaining weight and improve your health.

I'll spell it out. You must reduce your sugar intake!

While there are obvious things you can stop consuming right away, there are many additional things that are not so obvious. Sugar-loaded treats like candy, chocolates, cake, cookies, donuts... and sugary drinks like soda, cordials, fruit juice (yes, it's mostly sugar too!) and the list goes on and on... are all obviously unhealthy things you need to stop consuming.

However, there are many more sneaky sugar sources that you may not know about. So I'll tell you what they are!

Refined carbohydrates are quick-release, high GI (Glycemic Index) sugar bombs that cause a lot of problems. Bread, pasta, crackers, cereals, cookies, pastries and the like all covert to sugar.

What is less known is that starches also convert to sugar quickly in the body, causing blood sugar spikes. What are starches?

These are hidden in processed foods that can lawfully be labeled as ″sugar-free″ despite the fact that refined starches like maltodextrin have a way higher GI rating that actual sugar!

The bottom line is that if you really want to cut your sugar intake, you must stop eating processed foods. Period.

Whole Foods

whole foodsYou don't need to go on any fancy diet, take popular diet products, have a calorie restrictive regimen or do a punishing exercise program to lose weight.

You just need to eat whole foods that you prepare and cook yourself instead of those handy, convenient processed food items that you can buy at the grocery store. It is actually cheaper to choose whole foods over processed, additive laden, unhealthy products that come in wholesome-looking packaging.

Whole foods are the real thing. Fruit and vegetables in the fresh food section of the grocery store, cuts of meat, fresh fish and cartons of (preferably pasture raised) eggs are all whole foods that, pound for pound are cheaper than the packaged, processed alternatives.

Why Whole Foods?

Food in its natural state does NOT contain any added, man-made ingredients such as preservatives, colors, flavor enhancers and the like that you find in processed food products.

There is no ingredient list on whole foods, because they should not contain any added ingredients. For example, a slab of beef should have only one ingredient: Beef! A carrot is a carrot with nothing else added!

You get the idea!

Summary.

The benefits to your health by losing weight are enormous just by not eating anything processed.

You can reverse type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance by dramatically reducing your intake of sugar and the hidden sugars in processed foods by not eating any of them.

When that happens, your body will start using up its store of fat as long as you start doing some light exercise each day and instead of adding more fat, you will lose it.

It will happen gradually, but it will happen. That's the truth!
