Make Your Walking Exercise an Uphill Slog!

Posted by on 11 Jun 2010 | Tagged as: healthy exercise

We all know that walking is great exercise, there really is no doubt about it. But there’s walking and there’s walking! This post is going to take a quick look at one of the ways in which you can make your walking exercise more beneficial by making use of hilly roads if you have them nearby, of course.

It is quite clear that when you’re forced to stroll along at a painfully slow pace, like shoppers in a mall or high street tend to do, is counter productive as it causes stress in people who prefer to walk at a more normal pace to suffer stress at the frustration of getting stuck behind some lumbering fat old ditherer and not being able to get past. That drives me wild!

So the best thing to do is stay out of malls (I’m all for that) and keep your exercise walks for places that are more sparsely populated. The best walking you can do is up and down steep hills as it forces the heart to work harder and burns up much more energy, especially if you go at it with a vengeance. Walking fast and forcing yourself up those steep hills is great for toning leg muscles as well as your whole body. Its also great for getting rid of a flabby bum!

A half hour of this kind of walking is more beneficial than an hour walking sedately along the flat. If you can do it for an hour or more, all the better as you will burn calories in proportion to the length of time you spend forcing yourself up and down those hilly roads.

So get to it if you want to get yourself fit and healthy while losing some of the excess flab while you’re at it and find some hills away from other people and get walking!

Housework Makes You Healthy!

Posted by on 22 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: healthy exercise

Welcome back to Health Image, where I’m going to take a subject that instills a sense of foreboding and distaste in most housewives and also those blokes that are lumbered with doing the housework. There’s good news to be had in the form that housework is actually good for your health, at least when you do it in a certain way.

Now, at first blush, that is going to sound a little crazy and you may be wondering if I haven’t actually flipped my lid! But when you think long and hard about it and reason it out, it makes perfect sense. You can actually lose weight doing the housework because it really is good for you, whether you believe it or not. In fact housework is just another form of exercise and you can choose to treat it as such, or you can carry on just doing it as a chore that must be done while you switch off and think of your next vacation…

The trick to this, and I know because I do the housework around here, is to treat it like a workout and use whatever you need to make it feel like exactly that. So first you’ll need some rousing music. You choose what works best for you but it has to be upbeat and lively, like you’d do some aerobic exercises to.

Then you take each job and get into it with gusto! Where I live, we don’t have carpets as its a hot country, so we have marble flooring which doesn’t need vacuuming. But it does need sweeping and mopping and these two make great exercises when you make each brush stroke count and move into it with determination and va-va-voom!

If you have stairs, then use them as leg muscle work outs by running up and down them as fast as you safely can. This gets your heat rate up, gets you sweating and breathing hard. Same goes for cleaning those windows and mirrors – it can be hard work, so make it into a tough workout that leaves you out of breath. All this pushing your body to work hard with every housework job you do forces your body to burn calories.

Ah, I see the light bulb glowing now!

Yes, the whole exercise is designed to burn calories and when you do your daily housework jobs that take maybe an hour or so, that’s a really useful workout and a good amount of calories burned, while you tone up muscles and feel fitter!

Now who said doing housework was a chore?

Walk the Dogs for a Good Health Image

Posted by on 17 May 2009 | Tagged as: healthy exercise

In this post at Health Image, I’m going to take the thought that you need to promote a happy, healthy lifestyle and throw it out into the street with the dogs, literally! You see, you can walk the dogs for a good health image and they will thank you for your efforts as well!

A healthy lifestyle can be maintained when you are happy and your mind is not cluttered with the stressful debris of our modern rat-race infested lives. To take some time out and turn your back on all the craziness, a great way is to take your dogs for a walk, especially if you have a nice large park or woodland nearby. But even if you don’t, you can still walk around the street, assuming that its safe to do so of course. For people who don’t have to live in a less than desirable neighborhood of a large city, this is rarely a problem, especially of your dog or dogs are on the large side!

There is a twofold advantage to walking the dogs to promote that truly healthy lifestyle.

You get plenty of exercise in walking at a faster pace to keep up with the normal vibrancy and urgency of your dogs, plus you get to relax your mind by letting the situation of being away from the cause of your stress take over your thoughts and you can simply enjoy the time you spend with your dogs.

Of course you can talk to your dogs if you want. Who cares what anyone else thinks! Let other people get all stressed out thinking about that crazy person over there talking to their dogs!

After a good hour out with your dogs you’ll return home feeling refreshed, relaxed and good tempered, free from the stresses of the usual day to day same old same old! Not only that, but you will have given your body a good exercise session that will help it to stay healthy and fit. Now isn’t that tons better than all the hassle of going to a busy, bustling gym? I certainly think so!
